Booker: not absolved from the charge of treason

In his column this week, Booker makes the great mistake of making a rational case for limited immigration, pointing out that, in its chaotic system, the wrong people are being let in and some of innocent people are being excluded.

But that is too much for some of his readers, one of whom has marked him down as a traitor, with others adding comments which fundamentally disagree with him. Any immigration, no matter under what circumstances, is too much. Never mind that there a three million British expats abroad, and that foreign students bring £8 billion into the economy each year.

Interestingly, but rather predictably, many of the naysayers identify themselves as UKIP supporters, illustrating the cult-like tendency which seems to have taken over the party. Dogma and prejudice now predominates in the public discourse, together with a strident intolerance of any alternative viewpoint.

And the one thing the UKIP cult is making perfectly clear is that it will not tolerate dissent, nor accept that its heroes can do anything wrong. There was a time once when we could discuss issues but now we are simply replacing one brand of ignorance and intolerance with another.

More and more thus do we come to the conclusion that a Britain of which UKIP was a significant part would not be a pleasant place, nor any improvement on what we have already. The "Liblabcon" so derided by the "kippers" has now become "Liblabconkip".
